2025 NCEA Level 3 Courses
2025 NCEA Level 3 Subject Selection Guide
All students in Years 11-13 are required to select 5 option subjects and 2 backup subjects to ensure flexibility in case of full classes or timetable clashes.
NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance Requirements
It is highly recommended that students complete NCEA Level 2 English, as this is crucial for meeting the University Entrance Literacy requirements necessary for many tertiary courses and career pathways. If you have not completed NCEA Level 2 English, please arrange a discussion discuss this with Claire Farnan or Bernard Coleman for further guidance.
If you're considering university after Year 13, it is essential to understand the University Entrance (UE) requirements. To gain University Entrance, you must achieve the following:
- NCEA Level 3: A minimum of 60 credits at Level 3 or above.
- University Entrance Literacy: You need a minimum of:
- 5 Reading credits and 5 Writing credits at Level 2 or higher, from specific standards that contribute to UE Literacy
- Three University Entrance Approved Subjects: You must also gain 14 credits in each of three 'UE approved' subjects at Level 3.
What is University Entrance Literacy?
University Entrance Literacy refers to achieving the literacy requirements necessary for further tertiary study. This is broken down into 5 credits for reading and 5 credits for writing, which can be earned from a range of standards at Level 2 or above.
What are University Approved Subjects?
University Approved Subjects are specific subjects at Level 3 that are recognised by universities as contributing towards University Entrance. At Kaipara College, many of the subjects you can select for Level 3 are university-approved, but it’s important to choose subjects that align with your future goals, whether that’s further study or entering the workforce. You need to earn at least 14 credits in each of three approved subjects to meet the University Entrance standard.
