Course Description

Teacher in Charge: J. Mears

Level 1 Art - Aotearoa, our place, our land, our turangawaewae

Level 1 Visual Arts is a ‘mixed media’ Visual Arts course. It is a course for students who have enjoyed the Year 10 Drawing Project and want to continue to develop their skills and confidence with drawing, painting and expand into  printmaking.  In addition the course develops visual thinking and compositional skills. It leads on to three Level 2 specialist Visual Arts Courses: Painting, Design and Photography.

In this semester students embark on the external portfolio boards (1.4) after successfully completing their two internal achievement standards. They will utilise the skills learned in semester A (drawing, painting, collage, montage and printmaking including dry point etching, stencilling and collagraph print methods) and will further expand their creative thinking skills to plan and complete their external portfolio boards based on the theme of 'Aotearoa, our place, our land, our turangawaewae'.

Level 1 Visual Arts leads on to three Level 2 specialist Visual Arts Courses: Painting, Design and Photography. If students are taking this course with a view to taking any of the Level 2 Visual Arts courses then it is recommended that they take both semesters.

Note: Semester A can be taken without talking Semester B (the external portfolio boards) - but Semester B cannot be taken without first completing Semester A.
