Level 2 Tourism - Taste of Tourism - Semester A

This course is an introduction to the travel industry in New Zealand.

  • This course will introduce students to the process of tourism and tourism terminology.
  • Students will learn how tourism  operates in New Zealand.
  • This course will also introduce students to numerous tourism related work  opportunities and pathways.

Why should students take this course?


This course offers 10, Level 2 NCEA vocational credits in Tourism. It is especially suitable for students who are interested in working with people. 


This course compliments other subjects including hospitality,  geography and business studies. It also provides skills and knowledge for various industries such as retail, customer service roles, banking, administration and hospitality.


Tourism was a significant industry in New Zealand and worldwide. In 2018, tourism directly employed 8% of the total New Zealand workforce. Although this has changed, the main skills and attributes required in the workplace have not so this course will give you the opportunity to explore job opportunities within various industries. 


The New Zealand tourism industry is diverse and is made up of five main sectors. These sectors, that include  transportation, accommodation, sales and activities, attractions and events, provide a vast range of work opportunities.


With the current situation globally tourism’s importance has shifted however the skills and knowledge that you gain in this course can be transferred to many other industries and jobs.

This unit standard examines the main parts of tourism and how each part contributes to the operation of tourism at origin, in transit and at destination. The main parts of tourism are people, places and products.

Tourist Characteristics & Needs






This unit standard examines reasons why people travel and the travel products and services that tourists need. 

Students will  also analyse the top five international markets visiting New Zealand to determine what tourism products and services are provided to satisfy their needs.

Work Roles





This unit standard examines the various work roles in the industry. It also looks at the skills, attributes and knowledge required in the workplace.
