Choosing your courses

1) Choose your five courses including any compulsory courses for your Year level.

  • In Year 11 it is compulsory to select L1 Maths, L1 English, and a L1 Science course (either 1SCI or 1HORT).
  • In Year 12 all students must complete L2 English unless by arrangement with the Principal's Nominee, Mr Bernard Coleman.

2) Choose your TWO backup courses last.

To get started, students should look carefully at all the possible options available to them and at the important information on this website. Here are the steps to making an informed decision:

  1. Check out your career implications – will you keep your options open? Work out all your current career ideas and check the subject requirements. Decide which are the ‘essential’ subjects, then consider subjects which might be useful.
  2. Think about your abilities –  how have you done in this subject in the past? Can you do well in these subjects?
  3. Think about your interest levels – will you have the motivation?
  4. Weigh up any differences between interests, abilities and career ideas.
  5. Talk it over with people who know you well - your parents, whānau and teachers.
  6. Check out www.careers.govt.nz/plan-your-career and make an appointment to see Ms Bear, our Careers Advisor.
  7. Discuss your choices with your mentor during Mentoring.

Things to note when choosing your courses:

  • You can choose different subjects for Semesters A and B, but make sure this is an appropriate choice for your career pathway and that you check for any prerequisites in the Semester B courses.
  • Will you need to do a specific course in order to do that course at the next year level?
  • If you want to gain University Entrance and you are in Year 13, you will have to do take at least three (four or five is recommended) UE approved subjects for both semesters to ensure you gain at least 14 credits in each subject.
