Course Description

NCEA Level 1 Health (1HEA)

Through Food and Nutrition, Mental Health and Relationships and Sexuality Education, students develop an understanding of strategies, influences and decision making skills relevant to enhance the well being of self, others and society. 

The following curriculum skills will be covered:

  • Apply a model of health to understand wellbeing.
  • Use critical thinking in relation to values, attitudes, and beliefs, social constructs, power imbalances, biases, and assumptions that impact hauora
  • Investigate the importance of Māori values within hauora, identify and engage in strategies and practices that foster values such as tiakitanga, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and vā.
  • Understand how personal, interpersonal, and societal factors impact hauora and inform decision-making
  • Investigate diverse strategies to help manage stress and change
  • Develop understanding of how social justice, including fairness and inclusiveness, is essential to hauora

This course leads to Level 2 Health.

Possible pathways might include: Paramedic, First Aid Instructor, Hospital Nurse, Midwife, Rest Home Worker, Occupational Therapist, Mental Health Nurse, Diagnostic Radiologist, Natural Health Therapist, Massage Therapist, Chiropractor, Dietitian, health and Physical Education Teacher, Primary School Teacher, Police Officer Social Worker, Health and Safety Officer
