Ākonga should take this course if they want to explore the concepts and models of business to make sense of the economic world and apply these concepts in a number of practical ways. Ākonga will participate in making financial decisions in planning a class trip, participate in making and marketing their innovative product for sale and learn how consumers influence demand curves.
Ākonga will learn that decision making is necessitated by scarcity, and that decisions are informed by a variety of cultural perspectives and lenses. They will learn how participants in the economic world make decisions, and they will analyse how these decisions impact on sustainability.

Level 1 Commerce equips ākonga with the knowledge and skills to excel in Level 2 and 3 Commerce. The course includes accounting, business and economics standards which give ākonga a broad taste of the activities a business would be involved with. The study of Commerce provides students with both the theory and practical experience needed to succeed in a variety of careers in such areas as small business owners, banking, government policy, economics, iwi financial advisors, marketing, human resources, accountant.
