L3 Media Studies

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms L. Hunt.

Level 3 Media Studies (3MED)

We are exposed to various forms of media in our daily lives from film and television to music, gaming and social media. Every encounter with the media has been carefully constructed to communicate with you and to manipulate you in some way. Now is your chance to discover how to make sense of the media, create and innovate, and be prepared for a future that requires you to be a critical and active participant.

Key concepts in Media Studies include the study of the way media texts portray individuals, groups, experiences, ideas and events from particular ideological perspectives. Meanings are shaped by the interaction of media texts with audiences and social contexts.

Media forms have their own specialist languages and characteristic symbols and structures. Media products have distinctive ways of telling stories, particular narratives, and recognisable genres. The production and distribution technologies of different mediums influence the message and how it is interpreted, not just how we access it. Technological change has an impact on media products and institutions.

Media creation incorporates vision, energy, critique, and reflection to produce artistic and aesthetic interpretations. The creative processes in media production draws on individual, group, and community relationships.

Media Studies discusses the context in which media is produced, distributed, and consumed.
