NCEA Level 1 Visual Arts (1ART)

Level 1 Visual Arts is a ‘mixed media’ Visual Arts course. It is a course for students who have enjoyed Year 10 practical art and are wanting to continue to develop their skills and confidence with drawing, painting and  printmaking.  In addition the course develops visual thinking and compositional skills. It leads on to the  Level 2 specialist Visual Arts Courses: Painting, Design, Photography and Printmaking.

Through a pedagogy of Guidance + Action + Experimentation, students who learn in the Arts Faculty will:

  • Have opportunities to engage and experiment with a wide range of artistic expressions and genres in a safe supportive environment.  
  • Develop a love of the arts as a form of self expression and a leisure activity that supports wellbeing.  
  • Develop the skills and attitudes needed to gain access to further education and/or employment in the creative industries.
  • Understand the role of the arts in the world as a tool for making diverse people/cultures visible and as a tool for social justice.  

Visual Arts is a mixed media course that explores authentic local and National contexts, in addition to artmaking  and artists' ways of working. The course develops a range of art skills, visual thinking, idea development and compositional skills.


Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students have the option to purchase a take home stationery kit that includes a visual diary, quality paint brushes and fine art student paint. Specialty papers, inks, mediums and two A1 art board supports are provided by the school.

Pathway

Visual Arts is a mixed media course that develops a range of art skills, visual thinking, idea development and compositional skills. It leads to Level 2 Painting, Level 2 Design and Level 2 Photography.

Entry into a course may depend on prior performance in the subject area at the Dean and/or Head of Faculty's discretion.
