Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr I. Cribbens

Level 1 History - World War Two: Causes and Effects - Semester B

This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of key historical events that have changed both global and New Zealand History over the 20th Century.  Through analysing these events, students will understand how significant events, like the outbreak of WWII, are caused by multiple factors/events, and can have an impact which can extend across generations.

In particular, students will look at the causes and consequences of WWII.  WWII was the deadliest conflict in human history and would consume the lives of over 70 million people.  Causes studied include the Treaty of Versailles, the failure of the League of Nations, the rise of Hitler and the policy of appeasement.  Consequences covered include the use of the atomic bomb upon Japan, the outbreak of the Cold War and the creation of the United Nations.

All Achievement Standards offered during this course provide Literacy Credits and students will therefore be able to gain 8 literacy credits in this course. Note that both Standards are externally assessed in the end of year exams.  Students who wish to achieve Merit or Excellence Subject Endorsement must also take Year 11 History in Semester One.

This course will provoke students to think deeply and critically about the world around them.  Students will act as historians, finding and analysing historical sources to reach their own judgements about what happened, why it happened and the significance of these events.
