Level 3 Tourism - Taste of Tourism - Semester A

This course is an introduction to the travel industry in New Zealand.

  • This course will introduce students to the process of tourism and tourism terminology.
  • Students will learn how tourism  operates in New Zealand.
  • This course will also introduce students to numerous tourism related work  opportunities and pathways.

Tourism is a significant industry in New Zealand and worldwide. In 2018, tourism directly employed 8% of the total New Zealand workforce.

The New Zealand tourism industry is diverse and is made up of five main sectors. These sectors, that include  transportation, accommodation, sales and activities, attractions and events, provide a vast range of work opportunities.

Why should students take this course?


This course offers 13, Level 3 NCEA vocational credits in Tourism. It is especially suitable for students who are interested in working with people.


This course compliments other subjects including hospitality,  geography and business studies. It is also providing skills and knowledge for various industries such as retail, customer service roles, banking , administration, hospitality.


This course is an introduction to the travel industry in New Zealand and Australia.


  • This course will introduce students to the process of tourism and tourism terminology.

  • Students will learn how tourism operates, this knowledge can also be used in other service type industries.

  • This course will also introduce students to the destination knowledge required in the industry.

Although this has changed, the main skills and attributes required in the workplace have not so this course will give you the opportunity to explore job opportunities within various industries.

With the current situation globally, tourism’s importance has shifted however, the skills and knowledge that you gain in this course can be transferred to many other industries and jobs.

Learning Contexts

Students will examine New Zealand as a tourist destination. Students will identify and locate key  New Zealand destinations on a map; describe attractions, activities, events, transport, accommodation and provide travel information for visitors to New Zealand.


Students will examine suppliers used by the New Zealand travel industry to book travel products in Australia. You will research information on air transport and ground products and related services available to visitors travelling to, from, and within Australia. You will also investigate activities, attractions, and events in Australia; and provide travel information for visitors to Australia.



Please note: There is the opportunity to be assessed for other Unit Standards/topics in this course.
