Level 3 Painting - Reading between The Lines - an exploration of contemporary painting practice




Level 3 Painting students explore a wide range of contemporary painting and drawing practices. Students will explore, develop, extend and regenerate a wide range of ideas and refine their fine painting skills. It is a course for students who have achieved  Level 2 Painting and want to further refine and expand their painting skills and their deeper thinking and compositional skills. Students are expected to work in new ways and undertake experimentation, engage in research and artist analysis to help further develop and regenerate their ideas.  

In their first internal achievement standard (3.2) Students will utilise established contemporary painting practice to inform their work students will demonstrate their understanding of skills, techniques and explorations in paint media, and will demonstrate the application of these techniques, processes within their second achievement standard (3.3) where they will refine and expand their knowledge of painting conventions, explore, develop, extend and regenerate a wide range of ideas which they then re-generate and clarify  to make a series of fine paintings informed by established painting practice.

Level 3 Painting leads on to pathways within the Creative Industries, Design and Visual Arts. Further study in Fine Arts, Design or Architecture will lead to rewarding career outcomes.



Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Basic art materials such as communal paint, inks, dyes, specialty papers and communal pencils and brushes will be available. It is highly recommended at Level 3 that students have a take home kit that includes their own quality synthetic brushes. fine art student paint, a selection of drawing and design pencils and a quality visual diary.

A basic take home kit at wholesale prices would cost approximately $60-70. Students will be able to place an order at the start of the year to purchase the materials that they want for their personal practice or are free to supply their own.

Prior Learning & Prerequisites

Prerequisites: 

A Merit pass or higher in Level 2 Painting External Portfolio Boards would be advantageous 

If students wish to take Semester A - the external Visual Arts Painting Portfolio Boards they must have first achieved both the internal Level 3 Painting standards offered in Semester A. Students will need to take both semesters of L3 Painting for it to count as a UE subject.

At least 14 Achieved credits are required in an approved subject for the subject to count as an approved University Entrance subject. You will need to take both Semesters at Level 3 to earn 14 credits as each semester usually offers 8-10 credits.
