NCEA Level 3 English (3ENG)

NCEA Level 3 English has a strong written and reading element to encourage the level of critical thinking required in tertiary education. Students will explore a range of texts through a range of critical lenses. Writing submissions will be collated into a writing portfolio and there will be the opportunity to study for External exams.

The course is strongly linked to the key competencies of thinking, relating to others, using language, symbols and texts, managing self and participating and contributing.

In NCEA Level 3 English, students will learn to integrate sources of information, processes, and strategies purposefully, confidently, and precisely to identify, form, and express increasingly sophisticated ideas. By using these processes and strategies, students will learn to show a discriminating understanding of how texts are shaped for different purposes and audiences, and understand ideas within, across and beyond texts. Students will learn how to use and enjoy language and literature, and to show a critical and insightful understanding of a variety of text types. Students will gain valuable confidence in their ability to communicate effectively in a variety of forms, which will enable them to confidently move forward into the next stage of their lives.

Communication skills learned in English provide a solid foundation for all jobs and career pathways, but especially for careers in marketing, research, consultancy, journalism, human resources and trades.

Pathway

Level 3 English is an academic course that sets students up for further study and effective communication skills in the workforce. Key critical thinking skills and research methodologies are also valuable elements of the course that will set students up well for their future pathways.
