Course Description

NCEA Level 3 Drama (3DRA)
Drama at its core inspires the love of exploring imagination physically.
At level 3, Drama continues to develop the skills students have been building on in level 2 Drama. It also continues to grow students confidence in performing.
The course begins by expanding students’ knowledge of the influences of theatre. This will inspire students in their own original drama. As the course continues, students are able to use these skills and learning to perform more sustained and in depth characterisation. At level 3 we should begin to lose the actor within the character.
There is one theatre trip per year to see a show. This is to expand students’ knowledge of theatre and for use should the student choose to sit the External exam.
Drama helps to create confident, adaptable team players. It enables creative thinking in all aspects of a student’s life at Kaipara and beyond.
Through a pedagogy of Guidance + Action + Experimentation, students who learn in the Arts Faculty will:
- Have opportunities to engage and experiment with a wide range of artistic expressions and genres in a safe supportive environment.
- Develop a love of the arts as a form of self expression and a leisure activity that supports wellbeing.
- Develop the skills and attitudes needed to gain access to further education and/or employment in the creative industries.
- Understand the role of the arts in the world as a tool for making diverse people/cultures visible and as a tool for social justice.
Prior Learning & Prerequisites
It is recommended students have taken Drama at level two and/or have extensive experience in performing extra curricular.
Pathway
There are a wide variety of career pathways related to Drama and performance. The confidence, public speaking and creative thinking skills will help students with any future pathway. University courses within the Performing Arts and related subjects. Careers using Drama, Music, and Performing Arts include:
Actor (working in film, Television and Theatre), Theatre Technician, Stage Manager, Prop Builder, Arts Administrator, Barrister, Musician (solo, band, orchestra), Drama or Music Teacher, Songwriter, Broadcaster, Choreographer, Cinematographer, Playwright, Copywriter.

A combination of the above Achievement Standards will be on offer in consultation with students.Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
