Level 3 Design - Design for Global Issues - an exploration of contemporary Design Practice




Level 3 Design is a mix of hand and digital based Visual Arts Design. It is a course for students who have achieved  Level 2 Visual Arts Design and want to expand their skills further with  an emphasis on innovative visual thinking skills based on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The course involves a deepening understanding of contemporary Design and Designers.  With an emphasis on extending their knowledge and  use of Typography, combined with Image, for effective Design communication.  In Design students combine hand drawing skills with high level digital skills using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Visual Arts Design develops visual thinking, idea development and compositional skills. 

In this course Students will extend their ideas from the internal (3.3) to further regenerate ideas within  their chosen brief from the theme  ‘Design for Global Issues’  to plan and make a systematic body of work for their three External Portfolio Boards (3.4). 

This Level 3 course  leads directly to Tertiary and Industry Design pathways within the Creative Industries. Further study in Fine Arts or Design will lead to rewarding career outcomes.





Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Basic art materials such as communal design pens and pencils, aquarelles, access to inks, dyes, paint, specialty papers and communal pencils and brushes will be available. It is recommended that students have a take home kit that includes their own quality design pens, aquarelle pencils, a selection of drawing and design pencils and a quality visual diary plus a USB stick drive.

School also provides free access to the Adobe Creative Suite and a limited number of PC's for student use. It is recommended that students that take this course have access to their own laptop or computer as that will enhance their ability to keep up with the course at home and at school.

A basic take home Design kit at wholesale prices would cost approximately $40-50. Students will be able to place an order at the start of the year to purchase the materials that they want for their personal practice or are free to supply their own.

Prior Learning & Prerequisites

Achieved in Level 2 Design External Portfolio Boards.

If students wish to take Semester A - the external Visual Arts Design Portfolio Boards they must have first achieved the internal Level 2 Design standards offered in Semester A.

This Level 3 course is UE accredited and leads directly to Tertiary and Industry Design pathways within the Creative Industries. Further study in Fine Arts or Design will lead to rewarding career outcomes.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement, however, you will need to select both Semester A and B.

This course is approved for University Entrance however, you will need to select both Semester A and B.

At least 14 Achieved credits are required in an approved subject for the subject to count as an approved University Entrance subject. You will need to take both Semesters at Level 3 to earn 14 credits as each semester usually offers 8-10 credits.
