Level 2 Tourism - A Taste of Tourism - Semester B

This course is an introduction to the travel industry in New Zealand.

  • This course will introduce students to the process of tourism and tourism terminology.
  • Students will learn how tourism  operates in New Zealand.
  • This course will also introduce students to numerous tourism related work  opportunities and pathways.

Note:

  1. Tourism was a significant industry in New Zealand and worldwide. In 2018, tourism directly employed 8% of the total New Zealand workforce. Although this has changed the main skills and attributes required in the workplace have not so this course will give you the opportunity to explore job opportunities within various industries. 
  2. The New Zealand tourism industry is diverse and is made up of five main sectors. These sectors, that include  transportation, accommodation, sales and activities, attractions and events, provide a vast range of work opportunities.
  3. With the current situation globally tourism’s importance has shifted however the skills and knowledge that you gain in this course can be transferred to many other industries and jobs.  

Why should students take this course?

This course offers 12, Level 2 NCEA vocational credits in Tourism. It is especially suitable for students who are interested in working with people. 


This course compliments other subjects including hospitality,  geography and business studies. It also provides skills and knowledge for various industries such as retail, customer service roles, banking , administration and hospitality.


This course will introduce students to the process of tourism and tourism terminology.


Students will learn how tourism operates, this knowledge can also be used in other service type industries.


This course will also introduce students to the destination knowledge required in the industry.

Learning Contexts


Students will examine New Zealand as a destination. It investigates the statistical data in the industry. You will also look at the attractions, activities and events in New Zealand. As well as the natural and cultural features of New Zealand.


Students will examine the history of tourism globally.  It gives an insight into the development of tourism over the years and the events that have helped shape the industry.


Students will locate regions, countries, and gateway cities. You will also  identify the significance of regions and countries of the world as tourism generating markets and host destinations; and identify and describe tourist attractions, activities and events.
