NCEA Level 2 Painting (2PAI) 

Course Theme: Moving beyond boundaries - learning about contemporary painting practice 

Level 2 Painting students exploring a wide range of painting and drawing methods that relate to contemporary Art Practices and to their own personal investigations. It is a course for students who have achieved  Level 1 Visual Arts and want to expand their painting skills and their thinking. Students are expected to work in new ways and undertake experimentation,engage in research and artist analysis to help further develop and regenerate their ideas.

The course involves learning about contemporary Painters and their ways of working, with an emphasis on building practical skills and combining this with high level thinking skills leading onto the making of strong compositional artworks. Level 2 Painting leads to  Level 3 Painting and can lead on to pathways within the Creative Industries, Design and Visual Arts. Further study in Fine Arts, Design or Architecture will lead to rewarding career outcomes.

Through a pedagogy of Guidance + Action + Experimentation, students who learn in the Arts Faculty will:

  • Have opportunities to engage and experiment with a wide range of artistic expressions and genres in a safe supportive environment.  
  • Develop a love of the arts as a form of self expression and a leisure activity that supports wellbeing.  
  • Develop the skills and attitudes needed to gain access to further education and/or employment in the creative industries.
  • Understand the role of the arts in the world as a tool for making diverse people/cultures visible and as a tool for social justice.  

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students have the option to purchase a take home stationery kit that includes a visual diary, quality paint brushes and fine art student paint. Specialty papers, inks, mediums and three A1 art board supports are provided by the school.

Pathway

Visual Arts Painting develops fine art skill, visual thinking, idea development and compositional skills. It leads to further study at tertiary level in the Creative and Fine Arts and can lead to rewarding career outcomes.
