Level 2 Media Studies - Media vs. Society - Semester B

Why should students take this course?

This is a course for the creative and discerning media student. You will analyse how the internet, social media, gaming, television and film represent individuals, social groups, ideas and events. You will have the opportunity to discover how to make sense of the media, create and innovate, and be prepared for a future that requires you to critically engage with the media. 

Specific contexts will be co-constructed by you with your teacher. Past students have engaged with a wide range of media topics from crime, identity, LGBTQI+, racism, Aotearoa, misinformation, conspiracy theories, AR/VR and the impact of the internet on various media industries. 

You will demonstrate all PRIDE values in this course not only to achieve success but make the most out of your experience in belonging to a diverse and creative media studies whānau at Kaipara College.

Other Information

Students who want to gain a subject endorsement will also need to take this subject in Semester A.

Students who have not taken Media Studies 2.5 in Semester A will not be able to complete Media Studies 2.6 in Semester B and instead complete Media Studies 2.3 and Media Studies 2.4 (or another Achievement Standard in discussion with their teacher).

Students who complete Media Studies 2.6 will have a choice between completing Media Studies 2.3 or the External Media Studies 2.4 (or another Achievement Standard in discussion with their teacher).


Prior Learning & Prerequisites

You must be unafraid of a mind filled with more questions than answers. Be prepared to think critically of everything including your own media creations, and write about it.
