Course Description

Level 2 Biology - Semester B

This course teaches students how animals are adapted for survival. It includes how animals are classified, how adaptations allow animals to survive in their niche and how variation in animals is caused by changes in genetics between species and within species.

Curriculum Skills:

  • Practical skills - Learning how to set up and read a transect line to investigate an ecological community
  • Research Skills - Researching adaptations of animals and how adaptations allow animals to survive
  • Participating and Contributing - Planning and carrying out an investigation into a rocky shore community in groups.
  • Relating to others - Learning about how genetics lead to differences in humans and animals
  • Managing self - Working independently on an animal research project
  • Using language, symbols and texts - Understanding the terminology related to the topics covered
  • Thinking - Relating the knowledge learnt in this course to all organisms on Earth


In order to gain a Course Endorsement, students will have to combine this course with Level 2 Semester A Biology.


Prior Learning & Prerequisites

It is preferable that students choosing this course have studied Genetics at Level 1 or have passed a Level 1 External. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, entry to this course will be on a case by case basis.
